A lovely email dropped into our inbox from a grateful mum, who wanted to say a big thank you to DZG staff following her daughter’s recent Keeper for a Day experience.
It was such a nice read that we decided to share it!
Emily Barrington, from Walsall, was treated to the day as a 16th birthday present from her relatives and as she is currently studying veterinary care it gave her a real insight into the role, as she shadowed keepers undertaking their daily duties, cleaning, feeding and caring for their animal charges.
In her email, Emily’s mum, Angela , said: “Every member of the team we encountered is a real credit to the zoo. We were very impressed with the professionalism and the knowledge they had, as well as their obvious passion for the animals in their care and their involvement in the future plans for the zoo.
“They also showed an interest in Emily’s future plans and gave more detailed information related to dealing with medical issues and the care each animal requires, which she found very interesting and incredibly useful.
“The opportunities to encounter close contact with various species was very impressive, especially the big cats, which Emily said was ‘amazing’.
“In particular, her favourite time was spent in Lemur wood, where she fell in love with Sheldon the ring-tailed lemur!
“We, her parents, also felt part of the experience, as the keepers allowed us to follow Emily around the zoo, helpfully informing us of the best vantage points to take photos, as well as answering our questions too!
“Our family has visited Dudley Zoo on a number of occasions over the years. During this visit we were also impressed with the changes that have already taken place at the zoo with re-development and are excited about the ones still to come.
