Toucan’s highway code diet

Toco toucan, Oz, opts for a traffic light sequence when keepers hand out the iron tablets.

The bird slows down for the red pellets before getting ready for amber and then going for green.

The tri-coloured diet helps prevent iron-storage disease – excessive accumulation of iron in the liver and other major organs.

Curator Matt Lewis said:?“Oz always goes for this sequence although it doesn’t seem to apply to other foodstuffs as he certainly doesn’t eat his tomatoes first!”
