The Falklands Expedition

In 1974, former keeper Graham Chilton spent three months in the Falkland Islands preparing to bring back 12 elephant seals plus 90 gentoo and rockhopper penguins to Dudley Zoo.

Graham – pictured above left with two other keepers – had just ten days to catch their cargo and load the creatures on board ship before sailing back to the UK.

The seven week return voyage saw keepers individually hand feeding every penguin three times a day.

The Dudley Zoo keepers were also the first expedition to return to the UK with all their special cargo alive and and well – and the penguins went on to start collections across Britain.
