Two of DZG’s customer services staff swapped the shop floor for the animal sections when they became keepers for the day.
Retail Team Leader, Gavin Maybury surprised his girlfriend Harriette Westwood, a seasonal customer services assistant, with the experience for Valentine’s Day and discovered a different part to DZG!
Gavin said: “It was brilliant; one of the best things I’ve ever done.
“It was great to see a different side to the zoo and get up so close to the animals that we hear about so often.”
During the day the couple worked alongside keepers as they went about their daily duties caring for the likes of our Sumatran tigers, snow leopards, Humboldt penguins, chimps and spider monkeys.
Gavin, from Gornal added: “I loved feeding the tigers and the spider monkeys, while Harrriette loved the sealions and Oba even gave her a kiss while she was feeding him.
“I knew participants did quite a lot during the day, but I didn’t realise actually how much was packed in and how many animals you got to encounter.
“It’s brilliant for me to now be able to give visitors who are interested in taking part themselves a first-hand experience of what they actually do and I sold a keeper day on the spot a few days after to someone, just by explaining all about what we did.
“It’s such great value for money and I would definitely recommend it to people and not just because I work here!”
