We don’t like waste here at DZG and try to reuse and recycle as much as we can – including the inside stone of a delicious summer fruit!
Our animals tuck into seasonal produce on a daily basis and at this time of year they’re enjoying juicy peaches, melons and nectarines.
But primate keepers have discovered our Sulawesi crested macaques have a particular fondness for mango stones.
Senior Keeper, Jodie Dryden said: “Animals such as the bats enjoy eating mango, but we keep the fruit stones as our macaques in particular, love the flat seed that’s inside the stone.
“They’ll crack the pit open to get to the seed, which sometimes can be tiny and other times is huge.
“They also love licking off the mango juice from the stone, especially our youngest macaque, Summer, who always tries to get hers first.”
