A husband and wife from Leicester captured every moment of their Keeper for a Day experience on camera and have been left with some stunning mementos of their day.
Helen and Colin Veal – pictured above – shadowed DZG keepers as they helped muck out and feed the site’s animals as well as going behind the scenes to find out what really happens each day in a modern zoo.
Colin said: “All the keepers were really good hosts and very knowledgeable. It was lovely to go behind the scenes and see the animals from the other side and learn how the keepers try to enrich their lives.”
During their busy day, the couple tickled tapirs, fed tigers, watched a bird of prey display and even relieved the underarm itch of a black and white ruffed lemur!
Colin added: ” We chose Dudley Zoo as it was relatively local for us and had range of different types of animals, and as we could purchase the tickets directly we knew the money would be going to the zoo and not a third party intermediary.
“We had a great day and it is hard to pick out a favourite part as it was all interesting and fun, and the animals had such wonderful characters particularly those cheeky lemurs but if I had to it would be feeding the tigers, it was incredible to be so close to those majestic animals.”
