Stick insect is black beauty

This gorgeous beast is a Peruvian black beauty stick insect (Peruphasma schultei) and originates from a tiny native range of about five hectares in Peru.

dzg_love_your_zoo_st_insect_webThe species, which was discovered as recently as 2005, looks like it is made out of velvet.

Don’t get too friendly – they produce a pungent fluid as a defence mechanism when alarmed that can be an irritant to human skin.
