Steph Meakin had the “best day” of her life when she became a DZG keeper for the day.
It was a birthday treat to remember for the 36 year-old from Derby, who took part in the unique experience with husband, Philip.
Throughout their experience the couple worked alongside big cat, primate and ungulate keepers and helped them prepare food, feed, clean and care for their animal charges.
They hand fed the spider monkeys, gave our chimps and orangutans a drink, met our cheeky lemurs, fed fish to the sealions and meat to our tiger, before being licked by our friendly tapirs!
And after discovering how Steph’s favourite animals were bats, keepers rejigged the day so she got to meet our furry flying mammals in the 11th century castle, including Egyptian fruit bat, Narna, who Steph soon gained a soft spot for!
Steph said: “I wasn’t too sure what to expect, but I was blown away.
“We got to meet so many animals and the keepers were the friendliest I have ever met. Thank you to all of you for some truly wonderful memories.
“This is the most amazing day ever and I recommend everyone puts it on their bucket list.”
