Responsible Christmas shopping
Ahead of your Christmas food shop, our tapirs are helping us urge shoppers to help conserve wildlife – including their Malayan cousins – by not buying palm oil products.
Many festive indulgences, including chocolate, biscuits, Christmas puddings and mince pies contain unsustainable palm oil, which is devastating the habitats of the likes of Sumatran tigers, Bornean orangutans, binturong and Malayan tapirs, as rainforests are cleared to make way for palm oil plantations.
The vegetable oil, which is derived from palm fruit, is used as an ingredient in many foods, beauty products and soaps, but by checking labels and only opting for palm oil free products or sustainably sourced food, which show the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) Trademark or Rainforest Alliance logos, you can make ethical choices on your favourite festive fare and help pull these animals back from the brink of extinction.
