Raising penguin awareness

We’re celebrating a popular bird species today, as it’s Penguin Awareness Day!

The annual event helps raise awareness about some of the climate change threats the black and white flightless penguins are facing, including warmer water pushing them out further in search for fish.

Here at DZG we’ve got more than 80 Humboldts living in Penguin Bay – one of the biggest colonies in the Europe – and there are just FOUR remaining who need names.

Last month we offered bird fans the chance to adopt and name one of our penguins after a recent ID check revealed 40 didn’t have a moniker on their official records.

And with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, this is your chance to use some animal magic to woo your loved one by naming one of the remaining birds.

Marketing Manager, Andrea Hales, said: “Penguins are perfect valentine examples as they pair for life.

“And getting the opportunity to adopt and name your own makes the gift extra special.

“But with only a few nameless penguins left, lovebirds need to act quickly as not to miss out.”

All adoption packages include an admission ticket to come and visit your penguin in our popular walkthrough exhibit, where you can also learn more about the vulnerable species.
