Hallowe’en may be over for another year, but surplus scary pumpkins are still providing tasty treats for many of DZG’s animals.
Ungulates Team Leader, Jay Haywood, said: “We usually get donated leftover pumpkins following Hallowe’en and they’re certainly not put to waste.
“Lots of the animals across the zoo enjoy tucking into pieces of pumpkin at this time of year including small primates, parrots as well as our Brazilian tapirs so we slice them up and hand them out or use the hollowed out ones as enrichment toys which we fill up with fruit and veg.”
Caption: Trainee Keeper, Hannah Follows, gives one of the donated pumpkins to Brazilian tapir, Meena, while blue and gold macaw, Charlie, gets stuck into the orange vegetable, although Pumpkin the capybara isn’t too sure about his namesake!
