Our Humboldt penguins had a starring role in a special surprise marriage proposal!
Twenty year-old Paul McLaughlin contacted DZG’s Marketing Department for help in arranging a unique proposal for 24-year-old girlfriend, Gemma Murray.
The pair, from Leicester, visited for the day with Gemma’s parents, Yvonne and Vaughan and younger sister, Melissa, who were all in on the surprise.
Paul had secretly arranged for penguin-crazy Gemma to take part in the daily 3pm talk and feed with Team Leader, Birds Section, Kellie Piper.
But the surprise didn’t end there . . . Paul took over the Kellie’s microphone, got down on one knee and popped the question poolside, complete with engagement ring, in front of zoo visitors and Gemma said yes!
Gemma said: “I love penguins and being able to feed them is something I’ve always wanted to do as they are my favourite animal.
“I’ve always told him that my perfect proposal would involve penguins, so I can’t believe he went and organised it. It was brilliant, I’ll always remember it.”
Paul added: “I was really nervous all day and I’m just glad the ring didn’t fall in the water.”
The couple, who have been together for three years, have set a wedding date for August 22, 2013.
