Nidara’s legacy

The death of our adorable snow leopard cub, Nidara, from an intestinal infection came as a shock to all at DZG.

In her short life our smallest big cat touched lives across the globe as she made headlines on TV, websites and in print, plus a Facebook tribute that ran to 700 entries.    And it seems DZG visitors loved Nidara, as much as we did, as snow leopard cuddly toys flew off the shelves in the Safari Shop during her time with us.   Visitors wanting a memento of the tiny cub treated themselves to snow leopard cuddlies, and shop staff saw a sharp rise in sales during  those weeks over any other animal toy.

DZG Finance Manager, Jonathan Ashfield, said: “From June until mid July we sold 293 snow leopards of all sizes as visitors took home a reminder of our very special cub.”

Following her sudden death on July 11, the decision was made to give a per centage of funds from snow leopard toy sales to The Snow Leopard Trust; £250 has been donated to help protect the endangered big cats and their habitat.
