Nicola’s networking

Lower Primates Section Leader Nicola Wright is brimming with bright ideas after recently returning from an informative research conference in Ireland.

She attended the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) Research Conference 2015 at Dublin Zoo alongside 80 delegates from the UK and Europe.

The two-day event featured more than 50 talks about hundreds of research projects currently taking place in modern-day zoos.

Speakers included professors, elephant keepers and vets and talks touched on animal research as well as studies into the visitor experience at animal attractions.

Talk topics included the welfare of captive chimpanzees, the diets of titi monkeys, enrichment for Sumatran tigers and the effectiveness of zoo information signs.

Nicola said: “It was a chance to me to look at another collection’s facilities and network with other keepers.

“It was very useful and informative and I’ve come back with lots of ideas for research projects DZG could get involved in.”

Nicola had to compile a report about her experience of the conference and has put forward recommendations for projects which could be introduced at Dudley Zoo.

Her report is currently being considered by the management team.
