Lulu is the lovely new name for our Patagonian mara after we asked people to send in suggestions for the chance to adopt her.
Dozens of people entered the e-mail competition to name the newcomer and Keeper Josh Luxton picked out the winning entry from zoo visitor Rebecca Deeley.
Mum-of-three Rebecca, from Brierley Hill, said: “It’s amazing to win the adoption pack. I have three young children and we visit in the summer holidays so they will be very excited that Mummy has named the new mara.”
Two-year-old Lulu (pictured in front of Barry with Keeper Josh Luxton) moved in with Barry, Martha and their twins earlier this month from Amazona Zoo in Cromer, Norfolk.
The young twins, who were born at the start of September, also don’t have names yet but keepers will decide on those after they have been sexed.
Josh said: “Lulu just had a nice ring to it and seemed to suit her. She has quickly become part of the group and is very friendly.”
The name Lulu will now be added to the official records by DZG Registrar and Research Co-ordinator Dr David Beeston and will remain with the mara for her entire lifetime.
Adoptions start from £39.50 and include a certificate, an animal factsheet and photo, subscription to our ZooNooz e-newsletter, a zoo admission ticket, a greetings card and a presentation folder.
All pack purchases contribute to our vital conservation programmes, as well as helping us pay for special animal treats, toys, bedding, health checks, food bills, heating and more.
