Look back at 2024

Yet another year has flown by at great speed, bringing to a close a year that saw a number of species breeding successfully on the Zoo for the first time, with the Arctic foxes and bush dogs both rearing litters of pups.  And, let’s be honest, seeing the young exploring their habitats for the first time is one of the best parts of being at a zoo, whether as a visitor or member of staff. 

And the arrival of additional Humboldt penguins late last year has not only provided additional members to our colony, it has enabled us to recommence breeding, with five chicks being hand reared this year.  Following the devastating losses to avian malaria, it is incredibly pleasing to watch the colony recover and much of that can be attributed to the dedication of the keepers and veterinary team over the past few years.

So, what’s on the cards for DZC next year, well, it will be fantastic to see painted dogs back onsite and for us to be in a breeding position and we are also looking to deliver an extensive new outdoor play facility for our younger visitors, so keep an eye on our website and social media for more updates about these soon!

Finally, I have a bit of personal news to impart, as this will be my last Christmas working here at Dudley Zoo and Castle as I plan to take early retirement next spring. The process to recruit a new Zoo Director is already underway, with the aim for a transitional period before I hang up my boots and step down.
