Teenage keepers for the day, Leah Taylor and Zoe Hipkiss, certainly looked the part when they arrived in green fleeces embroidered with their names!
The tops – and the keeper for the day experience – were a surprise for their birthdays.
The 14-year-olds, who go to Shire Oaks Academy in Walsall, arrived on the day of Leah’s birthday with their mums Emma Taylor and Anne Hipkiss, just thinking they would be visiting the zoo.
Little did they know Mrs Taylor had booked the keeper experience and got them all the gear!
“I just wanted the outfits to add to the surprise but the keepers said their fleeces were so similar to the staff clothing that it would help put animals like the monkeys at ease,” she said.
“Leah and Zoe had a wonderful day. It was brilliant from start to finish. They loved the lemurs and fed the penguins, Jill the raven and the giraffes.
“Their favourite part was meeting the young orang utan Sprout, who put her feet through the enclosure and the girls were tickling her toes.
“She was absolutely loving it and so did Leah and Zoe.”
Mrs Taylor said both girls, pictured above with Apprentice Keeper Ellis Robinson, had waited until they were 14 to do the experience but wanted to come back when they were 16 to take part in the full keeper package and look after the big cats.
She said she would have to get new T-shirts made for the return visit, as they both had 14 printed on their backs, but the jackets would definitely have another outing!
