A juggling otter caught the eye of a local Press photographer enjoying a day out at DZG.
Tim Thursfield, who works for Wolverhampton-based Express & Star newspaper, couldn’t resist videoing our Asiatic short-clawed otters at play in their enclosure earlier this week.
He said: “I was amazed at how playful they were and stood watching them for ages as they picked up stones and juggled them with their paws.”
DZG Head of Media and Communications, Jill Hitchman, said: “Visitors are always surprised at the otters’ skills with stones.
“They are able to do this because their toes are not fully webbed, so claws do not extend over the fingers thus making paws very dextrous which allows them to move stones around easily.”
She added: “As enrichment treats keepers shape pieces of carrot into small balls which the otters then juggle.”
