Herbs and spices help!

We’ve got a plea to half term visitors to help us provide scent-sational enrichment for our big cats.

We’re running low on stocks of herbs and spices, which we use to encourage natural hunting, tracking and foraging behaviours for the likes of our Asiatic lions, Sumatran tigers and Carpathian lynx.

Keeper Josh Luxton said: “We regularly use herbs and spices as part of our enrichment programme which we rub on climbing frames and over rocks which the cats will sniff out and track.

“Our animals are stimulated and each react to different smells so we like to keep a good stock of many varieties so we always have a choice and we do find they each have favourites which produce stronger reactions, such as our male Sumatran tiger, Joao, who loves curry powder.”

We can use the enrichment for some of our primate species and Arctic foxes.

Donations can be dropped into the Safari Shop during the school holiday – and our cats don’t even mind if they’re out of date if you’re having a kitchen cupboard spring clean!
