Hello, baby!

There’s a new baby in the Discovery Centre – and look how gorgeous he is!

Meet Mercury, our newest chinchilla, who was born to mum, Tink and dad, Muffin on August 9.

The tiny ball of grey fluff is still tucked away behind the scenes in the education block with mum and dad, but will be meeting visitors in workshops and outreach events when he’s old enough.

Presentation Assistant, Amy Hickman, pictured above with Mercury, said: “He’s very cute and mum and baby are doing well.”

Chinchillas are classed by the IUCN Red List as critically endangered in the wild and are facing extinction due to illegal hunting for their dense, velvet-like fur.
