Happy Birthday, Inca!

One of DZG’s oldest residents is celebrating her birthday today as Asiatic black bear, Inca, turns 34-years-old!

The elderly bear is currently enjoying her semi-hibernation, so if she can’t be spotted snoozing on her climbing platform, then she will be in her dugout nest on the floor.

Assistant Curator, Richard Brown, said: “Everyone has a soft spot for Inca. She’s an elderly bear, but is in very good health for her age.

“She’s not so active these days and spends most of the time asleep, but she will soon move for her favourite monkey nut or sprat treats.”

Asiatic bears are native to the Himalayan region, roaming the mountain range from Afghanistan through to China and Japan.
