Happy Birthday, boys!

Dudley Zoo keepers threw Bornean orangutans youngsters, Jim and Joe, a joint party in celebration of their third birthdays!

And a handmade three-tier cardboard enrichment cake positioned in the middle of the outdoor paddock not only revealed hidden tasty treats for our Bornean orangutan family to enjoy, but also provided plenty of fun and games for our two playful birthday boys!

Primate Section Leader, Jodie Dryden, said: “Like typical toddlers, our orangutan boys love playing together and are obsessed with boxes.

“They like anything colourful that they can destroy, sit in or put on their heads!

“The cardboard cake was an instant hit and they played with it for the entire day. We even found bits of it in their den nests the following morning!”

Jim, who was born to mum, Jazz, turned three last month while Joe, who is Sprout’s offspring will turn three next week. Dad to both is Djimat.

Visitors can discover more about our orangutan family during our upcoming orangutan focus week, which runs from August 18 – 24.

Throughout the awareness week staff will also be on hand with themed activities and games to talk more about the threats the critically endangered species is facing in the wild as well as highlighting ways we can all help to save the orangutan.

Plus, visitors can find out more about the work of Sintang Orangutan Center in Indonesia, which works to rescue and rehabilitate wild orangutans and is supported by funding from DZC.
