It’s a very exciting day for Fergie, our adorable Bactrian camel, who’s one today!
And Senior Keeper Lesley Lewis celebrated the milestone occasion with an amazing cake in the shape of the birthday girl – made by our talented DZG Customer Services Assistant, Laura Partridge.
Lesley, pictured right, said: “Fergie is our very special girl, who deserved a special cake and we were amazed with Laura’s handiwork, although we’ll give Fergie some browse as a treat to share with mum, Jimandi and dad Charles, while we’ll tuck into the cake!
“Over the last 12 months she’s come on so much and has been a joy to watch grow up.
“We’ve seen her become very confident, although she has her dad’s temperament and has picked up one of his habits by stamping her feet when she’s waiting for her tea – although that’s quite amusing to watch.”
And Fergie is extra special for the keepers, as for the first three weeks following her birth they had to hand feed the newborn with replacement calf mix, as mum struggled to feed the youngster herself.
Lesley added: “Jimandi wouldn’t stand to let her feed, so we stepped in to help and were delighted that it didn’t take mum long to come round and she soon began feeding her herself and we left them to it. They’re a lovely little family.”
Lesley takes a look back at two of her favourite Fergie photos, taken shortly after her birth…
