Fantastic footage!
We’ve recently started retrieving wildlife camera traps from churchyards across the Black Country as part of our Hedgehog Havens – Urban Hedgehogs in Churchyards project — and we’ve already captured some fantastic footage!

From foxes and hedgehogs exploring after dark to a wonderful variety of other urban wildlife, the cameras are giving us a fascinating glimpse into what happens in these often-overlooked green spaces.
The aim of Hedgehog Havens is to better understand the role that churchyards can play for wildlife within the Black Country. Many churchyards are surprisingly large areas of green space surrounded by highly built-up and suburban landscapes. By monitoring wildlife activity across a range of sites, we hope to better understand how animals such as hedgehogs are using these spaces, and how churchyards could potentially be managed to support local biodiversity.

The project has been made possible through the generous support of our donors and match funding secured through the Big Give, and is being facilitated in partnership with Hartpury University and the Dudley Zoo and Castle Conservation Society.
We’re still collecting and analysing footage, so there are hopefully plenty more wildlife discoveries to come!
