Ear you go, deer!

Our reindeer herd are sporting the latest deer fashion accessories – bright yellow ear tags!

Using a similar technique to human ear piercing, keepers have inserted the plastic tags for identification purposes.

Each tag contains a unique number and code which relates specifically to individual reindeer.

The identification codes remain with the animal throughout its life and links it to DZG should it be transferred to another collection.

Via the unique number, keepers can easily keep track of individual behaviour, diet and health, with the information collated and updated by DZG Registrar and Research Co-ordinator, Dr David Beeston.
