Ecosystems

Workshop length: 50 – 60 mins

This workshop will look into the relationships within an ecosystem and how everything is linked together. Your students will look at the conditions of rainforest, mountain and desert ecosystems together with how animals and their environment affect each other. The re-introduction of wolves to Yellow Stone National Park will be used as a case study and your students will have a chance to meet animals from some of the ecosystems covered.

Animals: This workshop may include a chinchilla, cockroach, lizard and a rat.

Cost: £9.00 per child

 

Genetics & Evolution

Workshop length: 50 – 60 mins

This workshop will look into variation, natural selection, theory of evolution and inheritance. Your children will look at why animals evolve and why variation is important in the wild and in captivity. Finally how the mechanisms of evolution and inheritance actually work including medal, recessive and dominant genes and mutation will be discussed. Your students will have a chance to meet animals and biofacts within this workshop.

Animals: This workshop may include a chinchilla, lizard and a tenrec.

Cost: £9.00 per child

 

Conservation

Workshop length: 50 – 60 mins

This workshop focuses on animal conservation and the role zoos play in protecting some of the world’s most endangered animals. This workshop will cover how endangered animals are categorised, modern practises for zoo conservation (in situ & ex situ), why animals are becoming endangered and ways to monitor and protect animal populations. Your students will have a chance to meet some animal species with different conservation statuses as well as biofacts.

Animals: This workshop may include a chinchilla and a snake.

Cost: £9.00 per child

 

Animal Behaviour & Enrichment

Workshop length: 80 – 90 mins

This workshop will give students a chance to learn about different animal’s natural behaviours and how these may be displayed differently in captivity. Your students will learn about different types of enrichment and how they promote natural behaviours. At the end of the session your students will be able to make their own enrichment and see how animals interact with it.  They can also go out and study some of the animals on site.

Cost: £10.50 per child

 

Zoo Business Q&A

Workshop length: 50 – 60 mins

This workshop will cover how Dudley Zoological Gardens operates as a business in the leisure and tourism industry, a conservation and education centre and as a charity. Areas covered include: DZG’s mission statement, who benefits from the zoo, our business strategy, how to aim to run an ethical zoo and how we deal with competitors. At the end of the session there will be a chance for students to take part in a Q&A with the presenter.

Cost: £9.00 per child

 

Roles of Zoos & Enclosure Design

Workshop length: 80 – 90 mins

This workshop discusses how the roles of zoos have changed overtime and in turn how this has affected the design of enclosures within zoos. Your students will discover what role zoos played in the past and how that has changed into centres for conservation, education and research. As the purpose of zoos has changed, so have the standards and parties involved in the design of enclosures. This session will be based out on site looking at old enclosures, modern enclosures and amended enclosures to see first-hand how times have changed.

Cost: £10.50 per child

 

Tecton Tour

Workshop length: 50 – 60 mins

Starting in our Tecton Safari Gift Shop, this tour with give the students a chance to discover what the Tectons are, see how they were constructed and why they were built here at Dudley zoo.  The tour will then carry on around our 12 Tectons discussing their architect Berthold Lubetkin, the original purpose of each Tecton when the zoo first opened in 1937 and the contrasts to their use today.

Cost: £9.00 per child

 

Creature Feature

Workshop length: 30 mins

This interactive session will give all of your children a chance to meet a selection of animals up close with the chance to either touch or hold the animals. These will include an invertebrate, mammal and reptile.

Animals: This workshop may include a chinchilla, cockroach, ferret, guinea pig, lizard, rat and a snake.

Cost: £8.00 per child

 

Zoo Tour

Workshop length: 50 – 60 mins

Your students will be led on a pre-planned route around the zoo stopping at various enclosures and learning facts about the animals. If you would like any particular species to be covered please inform our bookings team and this will be accommodated where possible. Similarly, please notify them about any mobility issues as our site is very hilly with steps in some areas so we so we can amend the route.

Go Wild! Tour

Workshop length: 50 – 60 mins

This interactive tour will give your children a unique opportunity to learn about some of the amazing animals here at Dudley Zoo. Highlights include feeding our lorikeets and meerkats and meeting a friendly animal in our Discovery Centre.

Animals: This workshop may include a chinchilla, cockroach, ferret, lizard or snake.

Cost: £10.00 per child

 

Horrible History

Workshop length: 50 – 60 mins

In this workshop your students will be introduced to the world and life of medieval castles. Your students will learn about a variety of topics including the clothes worn, food eaten and even medieval toilets! There will be opportunities for your students to take part and dress up to help them understand castle life. They will also get the chance to meet animals that would have been around during the middle ages. Where possible this workshop will be delivered by a costumed guide.

Animals: This workshop may include a chinchilla, cockroach, guinea pig and a rat.

Cost: £9.00 per child

 

Castle Tour

Workshop length: 50 – 60 mins

Your students will be taken on a tour around the castle grounds giving them a glimpse into our castle’s history, construction and use through the ages. This tour includes areas such as the castle keep, Sharrington range, triple gateway and the undercroft. We also include the option for the class to look at models of what the castle looked like a different points through history.

Cost: £9.00 per child

 

Ghost Walk

Workshop length: 50 – 60 mins

This walk starts with a tour around the most haunted areas of the castle followed by a visit to our undercroft. This is where your students will have the chance to see some real life coffins and learn about the very best of our ghost stories and history.
