Delilah’s a perfect patient

Delilah, the young Bactrian camel, proved to be the perfect patient when our veterinary team were called in to treat a facial abscess.

Keepers noticed the swelling appear on her cheek and after careful monitoring, vet Peter Stewart decided to drain the lump, which involved sedating the one-year-old ungulate.

Zoo Manager Matt Lewis said: “The procedure was over in a matter of minutes and once the sedation wore off, all Delilah was bothered about was eating her breakfast, which she’d had to miss earlier in the day.

“The abscess has been left open so that it is able to fully drain, but it will heal up by itself in a few weeks’ time.
