It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of DZG’s female giraffe, Mia.

The 11 year-old died yesterday after sustaining a fractured leg during the afternoon.

Zoo Director, Derek Grove, said: “Mia had been receiving regular veterinary treatment for her legs, unfortunately the fracture was inoperable.”

All staff are understandably devastated by her loss.

Mia came to DZG in 2011 from Norfolk and gave birth to her calf, Kito in February 2014.

Twenty-two month-old Kito is now fully weaned and independent from his mother and will remain in the paddock with his dad, Kubwa and auntie, Josie.

The giraffe house will be open as normal today.
