Loved-up meerkats have doubled the size of their colony at DZG in just five months.
Proud parents Martin, aged seven, and ten-year-old Mabel produced two litters of triplets bringing the meerkat population to 13 our largest ever. Deputy Curator Richard Brown said: “It’s been a great time for meerkats, they are among our most popular species and always a favourite with young visitors.” The species, which originates from southern Africa, where they inhabit dry open grassland and savannah, reach maturity at six months. Gestation is 77 days and longevity up to 12 years. Diet includes scorpions, millipedes, snails, reptiles, small mammals and some plant material.
