DZG’s female chimpanzees are enjoying a bucket load of spring beauty treatments.
Keepers add a few drops of cod liver oil and a handful of seeds and chopped fruit and vegetables to buckets full of warm water to encourage the seven girls to bob into the moisturising liquid for the food treats.
Lower Primates Keeper, Stacey Ball, said: “It may all be fun and games for the chimps, but putting their hands and feet into the water – or in some cases, sticking their whole head in – to get to the food, is a quick and easy way for us to help keep their skin moisturised and protected by the oily substance during the spring chills.
“They also drink some of the water, which is just as beneficial to them, as cod liver oil is a such a great nutritional supplement, not just for humans but chimps too, especially in helping to lubricate their joints.
“The water doesn’t usually stay in the buckets for long though, as one of the chimps will usually come along and tip it upside down when all the food’s gone.”
