A teenager had a 13th birthday to remember, when she helped throw a spooky themed enrichment party for our chimps.
Amy Wheeler and dad, Matthew Clements-Wheeler took part in the meet and greet experience and as it fell during our half-term Freak Week, they helped Section Leader, Nicola Wright decorate the chimps’ indoor den with scary-faced pumpkins.
Nicola said: “Amy fed the girls and gave them a drink and while they were outside we hung paper towel roll all around the inside climbing frame, which looked like bunting and then hid fruit and vegetables around the den for them to find.
“Amy also helped fill some pumpkins with cooked spaghetti and sugar free raspberry jelly, which we also added in there, before letting in the girls and watching them hunt out the treats. They had a great time and it was lovely to watch them explore.”
Close Encounters last around 30 minutes and are priced £95 for two people and can be taken with a variety of DZG species, including lemurs, primates, giraffe, penguins, big cats, bats, sealions and reptiles.
Amy’s dad, Matthew, from Sutton Coldfield, said: “It was a marvellous experience which we both really enjoyed.
“We were impressed how Nicola took the time to explain all about the chimps and Amy loved getting involved and helping out.
“She’s always had an interest in chimps and primates in general and I thought she’d enjoy this as it’s something different and it was really good value too.”
All purchases of close encounters actively support our vital conservation programmes and helps pay for special animal treats, toys and bedding.
