Celebrating Mountain Chicken Day
DZG Presenter, Caroline Howard, is helping celebrate the first ever Mountain Chicken Day today, more than 4,000 miles away in the Caribbean.
Caroline is currently volunteering for the Dominican Mountain Chicken Project, working to raise awareness and help save the critically endangered species, which unlike its name suggests, is actually a frog!
The amphibian, known locally as the crapaud, has seen a large decline over the last decade due to a deadly fungal disease and habitat destruction.
The project, which is run by European conservation institutions and the governments of Montserrat and Dominica, aims to save the species from extinction by monitoring the remaining wild populations, setting up captive breeding programmes and then ultimately reintroducing them back into the wild.
