Baby mole rats!

We have baby news, as we’ve had four naked mole rat pups born!

The tiny new arrivals were born last month and can be found in their heated burrow in the chimp indoor viewing area.

When first born, baby naked mole rats are around the size of a jelly bean with their eyes sealed shut.  

Now aged around five weeks, our babies can now open their eyes, plus they’ve started to develop those recognisable front teeth to already start to try their first solid foods!

A weird and wonderful species, naked mole rats, as their name suggests are hairless as well as being cold-blooded.

They live in underground tunnel systems in their native East Africa and are neither a mole or a rat, but in fact are closely related to porcupines, chinchillas and guinea pigs!
