Annual audit gets underway

We’re kicking off 2024 by counting all of our animals as the annual audit gets underway.

Keepers at zoos across the country have to legally submit an accurate number of every invertebrate, bird, mammal, reptile and amphibian they care for as part of the Zoo Licensing Act.

This data helps international conservation programmes by being submitted into the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS), which is the world’s leading resource for the collection and sharing of data on animals and is overseen here at DZC by Registrar and Birds Section Leader, Nicola Wright – seen here counting some of our newest arrivals – 26 additional Humboldt penguins!

This year the count is also being boosted by an Asiatic lion, a wolverine, two bush dogs, a female Linne’s two-toed sloth, a male red panda, two black lemurs and our newest arrival – a baby giant anteater!
