Chris Hewitt from Sutton Coldfield went home with a camera full of close animal encounter selfies when he became a keeper for a day at DZG.
The animal lover was treated to the experience by his brother to celebrate his 30th birthday and joined staff for a unique behind the scenes day!
Chris said: “I worked in Dudley in 2011 and used to visit the zoo every lunchtime; it was always the highlight of my day, so I felt so privileged to have the opportunity to experience up close and personal encounters with the zoo’s amazing animals and birds.”
During the day Chris shadowed keepers from all four of the site’s sections birds, ungulates, big cats and primates helping feed and care for the site’s VIP residents.
He added: “Every part of the zoo keeper experience was special, from feeding the penguins and tiger through to playing with the lemurs and meerkats.
“All of the keepers who chaperoned me were immensely knowledgeable and passionate about their work. They also never tired of fielding my questions about the species they looked after.
“Since my first visit to Dudley Zoo, I have been captivated by the place. Unlike some zoos I have visited, the creatures at Dudley Zoo always appear very well looked-after and stimulated by their environments.
“I am so pleased to see the zoo’s excellent work being rewarded with ongoing redevelopment funding.
“Massive and heartfelt thanks to everyone at the zoo who contributed to making my experience so truly unforgettable.”
