DZG’s Global Tiger Day has been hailed our best yet as we raised £686.72 in aid of tigers in the wild.
Thanks to Donna Lane for this fab pic from Global Tiger Day
And we’ve rounded up the total to £1,000 from DZG funds for 21st Century Tiger, which does sterling work supporting conservation projects who are working to eliminate major threats to the big cat species.
More than 5,500 visitors joined us for our extended three-day celebration last week as staff highlighted the threats to tigers in the wild, where there are shockingly less than 400 Sumatran tigers remaining the same critically endangered species as our Joao and Daseep, who was once again the face of the campaign.
During the event visitors were able to learn more about the campaign through talks by our Presenters, manned information stalls and biofacts at the enclosure and a display in the Discovery Centre.
And as well as priceless awareness, staff were busy raising funds through tiger face painting and sales of tiger tails and ears.
We also ran daily raffles, with Friday’s winner Stourbridge grandmother and granddaughter, Ketrina Hill and Robyn Fleming (pictured left) – getting the chance to feed our tiger twosome their tea, while weekend winners, Katy Cotton (pictured below) and Jo Moore each took home one of our best-selling luxury Daseep cushions.
Zoo Director, Derek Grove, said: “Global Tiger Day was a fantastic event that DZG was proud to be associated with and we’re thrilled to once again support the wonderful work of 21st Century Tiger.
“It’s vitally important that we get the message out to visitors about the bleak future tigers face. If we don’t take action now extinction is unfortunately a very real possibility for these stunningly beautiful creatures and that’s something we simply cannot let happen.”
