We’re saying a huge THANK YOU to everyone who supported our Australia Day efforts and helped us forward a fabulous £5,000 for the bushfire wildlife victims.
Through on-site Aussie-themed fundraising games and activities, online donations, sales of nectar pots for our Australian-native rainbow lorikeets and half of all the day’s admission, plus a staff coffee and cake morning we raised an incredible £4,018, with the remainder added from DZC funds for Zoos Victoria’s Bushfire Emergency Wildlife Fund, which is helping provide veterinary care for some of the billion impacted animals.
DZC Conservation Officer, Chris Leeson said: “Despite the terrible weather we had during our Australia Day event it’s incredible to raise so much money and we want to thank everyone who supported our fundraiser.
“It was humbling to see so many people get behind a natural disaster on the other side of the world and every penny will help expert teams on the ground care for the animals affected by this atrocity, which is threatening to wipe out entire species, including those critically endangered.”
It is estimated more than one billon of Australia’s native wildlife have perished so far, with the number only set to rise in the coming months with the depletion of habitats and food supplies.
Zoos Victoria is a not-for-profit organisation, made up of three Australian zoos – Healesville Sanctuary, Melbourne Zoo and Werribee Open Range Zoo – with our donation going towards long-term care for bushfire impacted animals including endangered species, such as supplementary feeding and habitat restoration in conjunction with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Parks Victoria and associated recovery teams.
