Merry Christmas, deer!

There’s just 10 days to go and there are two DZG girls who are particularly excited for the big day.

As this year is the first time our baby reindeer, Sunflower and Jasmine, have met the man in red!

The youngsters made headlines earlier this year when they were both unusually born in the height of summer, with Sunflower born in July and Jasmine arriving in August.

Now aged five and four months-old respectively, they’ve been patiently waiting for their impending festive duties to begin.

And Trainee Keeper, Ellis Robinson has been working with them over the past few weeks to introduce them to a harness, so that they’ve been able to join the rest of the herd at Santa’s Winter Wonderland grotto in the castle grounds.

Ellis, pictured with Sunflower top right, said: “Sunflower and Jasmine are such cheeky characters and have been very popular with visitors since their birth. They’ve doubled in size in the last few months and have started to develop their thick coats just in time for winter.

“They’ve done really well with harness training, which has enabled us to walk them safely from the reindeer den to the castle courtyard, alongside their mums, Lily and Blizzard and they’re really enjoying meeting grotto visitors.

“And of course they’ll need a harness on for the all-important sleigh-pulling duties for Father Christmas on December 24.”
