Key Stage 3 Sessions

For pupils in years 7, 8 and 9

At Dudley Zoo our KS3 Sessions are underpinned by the National Curriculum Programmes of Study 2013 for all subjects.

 

Ecosystems

50-60 minutes – £8.50 per child

In this session we will be looking at the relationships in ecosystems and interdependence of organisms in it. We will also look at how organisms have an affect on and are affected by their environment. Meet some animals involved in the examples of ecosystems we have looked at.

 

Genetics and Evolution

50-60 minutes – £8.50 per child

This session looks at variation between individuals within a species, as well as learning how genetic information is passed on. We will cover natural selection and learn how extinction occurs and think about what needs to be done to help prevent this.

 

Conservation

50-60 minutes – £8.50 per child

Find out about some of the most endangered animals on the planet, learn how we tell what is endangered and how zoos contribute to conservation. Discover the principles of modern conservation and find out how you can help protect the environment. Also get the opportunity to meet some live animals and look at biofacts such as tiger pelts.

 

Animal Behaviour and Enrichment

80-90 minutes – £10.00 per child

Learn about the natural behaviours of some of our animals and help us to make an enrichment device for an animal in the zoo. At the end of the session you will be able to watch the animals explore and enjoy the enrichment you have made for them!

 

Zoo Business Q + A

50-60 minutes – £8.50 per child

Find out how DZG operates as a business. We are a registered charity and we are home to over 1500 animals. Discover how we work as a team to run the zoo 365 days a year. Towards the end of session is your opportunity to ask staff questions with a Q + A Session.

 

The Role Of Zoos

50-60 minutes – £8.50 per child

This session explores how zoos have changed over time and shows the valuable role zoos play today, in conservation and education.

 

The Tecton Trail and Tour

50-60 minutes – £8.50 per child

Taking place in one of our original Tecton structures, the Safari Gift Shop – find out what Tectons are, see how the Tectons were constructed as well as learning about why they were built here in Dudley, by the famous Architect Berthold Lubetkin and the Tecton group.

 

KS3 Extras

 

Creature Feature

20-30 minutes – £7.50 per child

Not studying a particular topic at school but still want to get hands on with a variety of our smaller friendly animals, then this session is the one for you. Your children will get to meet some of our smaller, friendly animals such as invertebrates, reptiles and mammals.

 

Zoo Tour

50-60 minutes – £8.50 per child

Accompany one of our Education Presenters as they take you on a tour around part of the zoo, get to learn some fascinating things about our animals as well as getting the opportunity to ask questions regarding the species that you see.

 

NEW Go Wild! Discovery Tour

50-60 minutes – £9.50 per child

This interactive tour includes a visit to Lorikeet Lookout where your children can feed these colourful birds. Heading up the Snail Trail your children are encouraged to look out for lions, lemurs, hunting dogs and sea lions on their way. There will also be the opportunity to meet some of the Zoo’s smaller animals in the Discovery Centre and see our meekats being fed.

 

KS2 History

 

Horrible History

50-60 minutes – £8.50 per child

This session will be delivered by a costumed guide in our castle undercroft and will include an animal encounter. We will learn about the history of Dudley Castle, what life would have been like and get to meet some of the animals that you would have lived along side.

 

Castle Tour

50-60 minutes – £8.50 per child

This tour provides a unique glimpse at Dudley Castle through time, discovering it’s rich history, construction and use through the ages.

 

Ghost Walk

50-60 minutes – £8.50 per child

This tour will give your children an opportunity to explore the fourth most haunted Castle in Britain. With over 400 ghosts and spirits on site your children will hear some of the most famous ghost stories, whilst also finding out about it’s turbulent history!
