An eggcellent day!

DZG animals are tucking into a few eggs-tra treats during British Egg Week!

The week-long event, which runs from October 9 – 15 and incorporates today’s World Egg Day celebrations, promotes the vast benefits of eggs, which are loved not just by humans, but animals too – including our critically endangered Colombian black spider monkeys.

Curator Richard Brown, said: “Eggs are so nutritious as they’re an excellent natural way of boosting protein and vitamin levels and they’re enjoyed by a variety of the exotic species across the zoo’s 40-acre site, including otters, red pandas, parrots, chimps, lar gibbons, giant anteater, beaded lizards and macaques.

The majority of our animals are treated to hard boiled eggs as extras in their diets each week, while some enjoy them raw, and others including some bird species, meerkats and mongoose eat the rich calcium shell too.
